Kid Friendly Cottage Pie Recipe

Secret family cottage pie recipe that is kid friendly

Have you ever wanted to make a kid friendly meal, only to have your kids pull up their noses at the painstakingly, carefully designed meal that you made? Well, no more! This is a kid friendly cottage pie recipe that my dad used to make and it is full of all the flavours that kids love.

The cottage pie recipe is so easy to make, that it only contains 5 ingredients, and it is a quick throw together meal that should be able to be prepped in less than twenty minutes, and then be in the oven for about twenty minutes.

What is great about this cottage pie recipe, is that you can add any veggies that your kids like. There is no more fighting over eating their veggies because either it is not so easy to see, or it is the veggies that they like to eat. I usually add Superstore’s no name frozen cubed veggies, but sometimes I will add a can of beans, or a can of corn. I have even added lentils to this cottage pie recipe before, and the kids still loved it, it was still kid friendly, and without drama.

This cottage pie recipe can be a little runny, and if it is, the trick is just to add a slurry of corn starch and a tiny bit of water while you are still cooking the meat in the pan so that it can thicken up a bit. Kid friendly meals are firm, not runny. I usually don’t make a slurry, but it really depends on the amount of ketchup that you add to the recipe.

Frugal Tips for the Kid Friendly Cottage Pie Recipe

One tip is that at Superstore, there are three rolls of Ground Beef that you can purchase for $10. This is a great way on saving money as you can use one roll and freeze two others for other meals. Each roll is about 450grams.

Another tip is to shop around for the different veggies. Sometimes potato prices vary at different stores. Look online, and see where you can find them for the cheapest price and plan your route so that there is a stop in for that store.

Another tip is to buy no name frozen peas and carrots. This will help with the cost of the veggies, if you add veggies in.

And lastly, freeze the butter! If you freeze butter, it will last longer.

How do I make the Kid Friendly Cottage Pie Recipe?

Firstly, brown the meat, and then add about a cup of ketchup into the pan, along with the meat. Let it boil in and let the flavours mix properly. Then add your veggies. In the meantime, boil potatoes and fluff it up with some milk and butter. At the end, all you need to do is add it together and put it in the oven for about twenty minutes. I usually boil my potatoes in the Instant Pot to save time. I never make a meal without using my beloved Instant Pot!

With this kid friendly cottage pie recipe, dinner at my house is always a hit!
