A Quiet Time with God is Essential to Christian Growth
John 15:1-14 is one of my favorite passages in Scripture because it talks about spending time with God. The way we spend time with God is often called “quiet time with God” because it is where we become quiet before Him, cut out all other distractions and focus our hearts and minds on what He wants to say to us.
In John 15:1-14, Jesus is speaking and mentions that He is the Vine, and we are the branches. When we look at vineyards, it is something that is cared for. The owner of the vineyard will carefully look at the vines, prune them, cut off the dead branches, break off dead leaves and so forth. It is a meticulous process to look after grapes and this is why Jesus uses this illustration.
Quiet time with God is essential because Jesus mentions that we are to remain in Him, and He will remain in us, and that apart from Him, we can do nothing. We do this through having a quiet time with God. This is where we spend time reading His word, the Bible, and we also spend time in prayer. As we read, He will impress things upon our heart that He wants us to hear! As we pray, our will starts to align with His will. He can also impress things upon our hearts as we pray.
How do we have a quiet time with God?
There are several things we can do to have a meaningful quiet time with God. The ideal thing is to have a quiet area, without distraction, but if you aren’t able to do this, and you are a busy mom with kids, then you can put the kids in a play area or so, and then find a spot where you can sit, while you can still keep an eye on them and spend time with God. If you can learn to quiet your heart before God, that is just as good as time in the quiet, and God understands the season that you are in.
Things you can do to have an effective quiet time with God includes:
- have highlighters available that you can mark verses that stand out to you
- have a pencil available to write dates and insights God is giving you during your time with Him
- another thing you can do is to have a notebook and jot down things that you feel God is saying to you
- write down what you need to pray about on a list as it helps you to remember and when an answer comes, you can jot the answer down
- you can write down prayers you want to remember and stick them in a special place
- journal your journey with God
- use a devotional from time to time to keep yourself from getting stale
- use a book from time to time, such as Elisabeth George’s Mother after God’s own heart or Woman after God’s own heart for example (click on the links to go to the books on Amazon)
- use sticky notes to stick on your mirror or car with meaningful verses God used to speak to you in your quiet time with Him
There are many things you can do to spice up your quiet time with God and to keep it from going stale. I’ve done everything from the things mentioned to having a “date” with Jesus.
