Is There a Magic Recipe on How to Hear From God?
Would it not be nice if there was a magic recipe to hear from God? Often, we don’t know how to hear from God in our lives. Did He really speak to us? Is God saying? How do I know if it is God talking and not just my own thoughts going through my head?
The first step in learning how to hear from God is to get close to Him. You cannot hear from God if you are not spending time with Him. In John 10:27-28 Jesus is saying that his children, the sheep is likened to His children, knows His voice, because they follow Him. So then the next question is how to get close to God? This is only possible if someone has recognized that he or she is a sinner and in need of a Saviour. You see, our sin has separated us from a just and holy God. When we get the idea that we cannot please God and get close to Him on our own, you’re halfway there! What needs to happen is that we need someone to come alongside us and advocate on our behalf with God. That is where Jesus comes in. He is God’s son, but He also was fully human, lived a life on earth, and died a death on a cross so that you and I can be forgiven. He earned the right to be that advocate between you and God. When we pray and ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins, and to make us God’s children, we are saved. That is the first step in hearing from God.
The next is to spend time with God. We cannot hear from God if we do not spend time with Him. This is a spiritual discipline that needs to be exercised every day. Spend time reading God’s word, the Bible. As you read, you will get to know God, and His voice. Sometimes hearing from God isn’t as much as “hear God’s voice” as it is knowing what He wants. We get to know that through the Bible.
Sometimes, as we we read, and pray, words will suddenly stand out to us in the Bible. This is one way how to hear from God in a sense that what He wants us to pay specific attention to pops off the page and becomes very noticeable to us. It is important to take note of these.
Another way how we can hear from God is by prayer. Sometimes, God will impress upon our hearts a thought that does not want to go away. I would say this is hearing from God. Usually, when He does this, He will confirm it through Scripture. This means that we hear from God what He impresses on our heart, and then we will find what He said to us in Scripture. If it is not backed up by the Bible, it probably isn’t from Him.
Another way to hear from God is through people, circumstances, and other means such as videos, radio and so forth. Sometimes, something will pop out in something we hear on the radio. I once had a promise from God through a radio host reading some scripture. Just one verse, but I knew deep within that that verse was a promise to me from God. I’ve had Facebook reals come across my screen with Bible verses I really needed to see at that very moment. These are all ways how we can hear from God. People may say something, or the circumstances could be such that there is no doubt that God is speaking and saying something through it.
We need to be careful not to follow our own voice when we are seeking how to hear from God, but we need to make certain that the words we are hearing are really from God, and that He has really spoken. As you get to know God through reading His word and through prayer, you will get to learn how to hear His voice.
